HALF A MOON AND ONE WHOLE STAR
by Crescent Dragonwagon. Il1us. by Jerry Pinkney. Macmillan, 1986.
1987 Winner

A young child sleeps, peacefully unaware of the night activity that surrounds her. Under "half a moon and one whole star" robins, parrots and chickens sleep while owls, bats, possums and raccoons awaken to begin their nightly outings. In the city Johnny gets ready to play his saxophone at the club, bakers are busy at their ovens, while ships at the dock weigh anchor and start their journeys. As the night ends, the possums and owls get ready for sleep.

ACTIVITY: List phrases from the story telling what night creatures do.

IN THE WOODS
robins sleep
parrots rest
owls rouse
possums sniff
crickets whir
raccoons walk
IN THE CITY

Use the phrases in a London Bridge Song.
