ABOUT THE BOOK
While walking home late one night through the French Quarter in New Orleans, Jessie Bollier is kidnapped by two crew members of The Moonlight. He is wrapped in a canvas cloth and forced to walk across a bayou, all the while afraid that a cottonmouth snake is going to attack him. His captors force him onto the ship because they want him to play the fife for Captain Cawthorne. Thinking that he has been abducted to entertain the crew members, Jessie is shocked to learn he will be playing his fife to "dance the slaves." The slaves are being illegally transported from Africa to Cuba aboard The Moonlight. During the journey, Jessie befriends a young slave boy named Ras. While trying to escape an American patrol ship during a violent storm, everyone on board dies except for two people. To find out who survives and what happens to them, read The Slave Dancer .
