ABOUT THE BOOK
Set in Mississippi in the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their pride and independence. It is a story of physical survival and of the survival of the human spirit.
The characters, Cassie, Stacey, Little Man and Christopher-John, experience racial antagonisms and hard times, but learn from their parents the pride and self-respect they need to survive. Owning their own land meant much to the Logan family because it gave them freedom. But when Papa used his land to back credit for black families to shop in Vicksburg, that freedom is threatened. Live day by day with the Logan family in the turbulent year they experience in this moving novel.
